Chanhassen Radar Update From Multiple Sources
You may have noticed the Chanhassen radar images were not available for about a week in early August. They were able to put the new technology to immediate use as the KMPX Doppler Radar captured the 15-Aug hail storm in Stevens County. Read and see examples of the about the enhanced images.

September Harvest moon From Multiple Sources
When the Harvest Moon appears, the time difference between moonrise on successive evenings is much shorter than average. The moon can rise 30 minutes later from one night to the next. There is not a long period of darkness between sunset and moonrise for several days following the actual date of the full moon. This extra light can help farmers working to bring in their crops, hence the "Harvest Moon".

Leaf Changes From Multiple Sources
There has been a lot of discussion surrounding the timing of changing leaf colors. The early warm weather combined with the recent dryness would seem to make an early autumn a possibility. In anticipation of this Minnesota citizens may want to start monitoring the fall leaf color reports on the DNR web site

Hurricane Lightning From MSNBC
Even though hurricanes are some of the world's most powerful storms, there is little lightning at their core. Winds within 60 miles of the eye are horizontal. This prevents huge updrafts necessary to form ice crystals and supercooled water that usually lead to lightning. Researchers found large spikes in lightning activity occurred near the eye wall of cyclone Nargis in 2006. They attribute the increased lightning 36 hours before its deadly intensification to a phenomenon known as "eyewall replacement". The eyewall is the innermost band of concentric rain bands. As the outer band migrates inward, it causes large updrafts in the storm's core. The updrafting increases the frequency of lightning strikes.

Dust Score
There are many different satellites and instruments in use to measure different weather, climate, and atmospheric conditions. The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) uses infrared technology to create 3-dimensional maps of air and surface temperature, water vapor, and cloud properties. Displayed as a map, Dust Score shows areas where concentrations of dust are highest in the atmosphere.
