SKYWARN Amateur Radio
Most of SKYWARN communication is handled by Amateur Radio. A series of repeaters in Minnesota have been designated as paths for communication with the NWS in Chanhassen, as well as between SKYWARN groups. The recognized paths are illustrated in the map below.
By convention, the tactical call of a SKYWARN operation is the city of operation. For example, the tactical call used to identify Steele County SKYWARN is Owatonna SKYWARN. This convention was established to avoid the confusion that could be caused by cities and counties that have the same name but are not in the same place. For example, Faribault is a city that is not located in Faribault County.
